The national colours derive from the arms of the medieval principality of Galicia golden lion on a blue field). The first Ukrainian flag, adopted by the Supreme Council in 1848, was a yellow-blue horizontal bicolour and this was the first flag of the independent Ukraine, adopted in January 1918. However, in the 19th century most of the flags displayed by the public were bicolours, with the blue at the top, and this order of colours has been official since March 1918. The blue stands for the sky and the yellow for wheat, the main source of the wealth of Ukraine.
