ROMANIA FLAGS AND BUNTING

Blue, yellow and red are the colours of the arms of the principalities of Walachia (red and yellow) and Moldavia (red and blue). These colours appeared together for the first time in 1848 on a revolutionary vertical tricolour of blue-yellow-red which was based on the French Tricolore. Walachia and Moldavia united in 1861 under the name of Romania, and adopted a red- yellow-blue horizontal tricolour. In April 1867 the colours were reversed and arranged vertically. From 1867 to 1989 the state flag was always charged with the actual state arms.
