The flag of Nigeria
was designed in 1959, then being raised for the 1st time on the 1st of October 1960. Its design consists of three equal, vertical bands of green, white and green. It was designed by Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi in a national contest that he won, only being a 23 year old student at the time. His original submission (sent from his then home in London) also included a red badge of the radiating sun, but this was removed by the judges. Since then the flag has remained unchanged and was hoisted for the first time on the day of independence from the United Kingdom. The Nigerian flags two bands of green represent the inescapable natural wealth in the country, such as its luscious forests and unique wildlife, with the central white band representing unity and peace amongst its people.
