The flag of Kenya
was adopted upon its independence from Great Britain on the 12th of December 1963. It is made up of horizontal stripes of black, red, and green, with thin strips of white between those. In the centre is a red, white, and black Massai shield, with two crossed spearheads. It is based upon the flag of the Kenya African National Union, the political party that ruled Kenya for some 40 years after independence. The party lead the fight for independence and greater freedoms for its people, therefore it was deemed appropriate that a variant of their flag be used as a national symbol. The black of the flag is to represent its people, the red it to represent bloodshed in the fight for freedom, and the green is to represent the natural wealth of the country, with the white to represent peace and harmony between these things. The shield and spears are to represent the need to defend the nations values and beliefs.
