The flag of Egypt
is made up of three equal stripes of red, white, and black. Its colours are based upon those used in the Arab liberation of Egypt in 1952. In the centre of the flag is the Eagle of Saladin, acting as a symbol of Arab nationalism for not only Egypt, but also Iraq and Yemen. The colours used are three of the four Pan Arab Colours (black, white, red and green). These four colours are to represent the four caliphates of the Arab world. In the Egyptian flag however, each colour is said to represent the blood of the people (red), the purity of the Egyptian heart (white), and the overcoming of darkness (black). The flag we know now was first used in 1984, but the overall design of the colours with the central eagle appeared first in the year following the overthrowing of the Monarchy (1952).
