EAST TIMOR FLAGS AND BUNTING

This flag (with the star positioned upright) was first hoisted when East Timor proclaimed independence on 28 November 1975, and was banned by the Indonesian occupation that started nine days later. Red symbolizes the blood shed in the long struggle for independence. The black triangle represents colonial oppression, the yellow border stands for a spear of freedom. The white star is a symbol of hope.
