The flag of Dominica
was first adopted on the 3rd of November 1978, having been designed by playwright Alwin Bully in the early months of 1978,during preparations for independence. It has been altered since then, but only being minor adjustments, the most recent variation coming into use in 1990. The bird in the centre is the Sisserou Parrot, from the coat of arms, the national bird of the island. The green field of the flag represents the lush vegetation on the island and its importance to their way of life. The cross (made up of three bands) is to represent the Christian Trinity, with its three colours each representing the native people, the fertile soil, and the clean, pure water. The ten stars in the flag each represent one of the ten parishes on the island, with the red disc in the centre representing justice.
