The flag of Bermuda
(officially, the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda) in its current form was first adopted on the 4th of October 1910, the only change since then, being the enlargement of the coat of arms seen on the fly (the side furthest from the pole). Its design is known as a defaced (meaning altered) Red Ensign, which is the official name for the field of red with the Union Jack in the top left corner, which comes from the British Empires links with Canada and South Africa (two countries that used the red ensign). The motto on the coat of arms (Quo Fatta Ferunt) translates from Latin into English as, Wither the fates carry us. The ship on the coat of arms, the Edward Bonaventura is one of three to have set sail from Plymouth in 1591, going onto strike a reef off the coast of Bermuda and sinking. The two dozen men who survived built a new ship from resources they found on the island, and atop the coat of arms is a red, British Lion, symbolising the nations historic and present connections to the United Kingdom, formerly the British Empire.
