The flag of Austria
is recognised as one of the oldest symbols used by any modern nation in the world, with its first recorded use being as early as 1230. A local legend goes that a Duke Leapold V of Austria was fighting in The Siege of Acre during the 3rd Crusade. He wore a white garment, which had been soaked with blood in the fighting. He then removed his thick belt, revealing a band of preserved white cloth. He was so struck by this image that he quickly adopted it as his own banner in the remaining battles. In addition to this, the horizontal triband design of red, white, and red is believed to originate from the shield of the Babenberg Dynasty, an aristocratic family from medieval Austria. This design was used in order to represent the nation itself, in contrast to an alternative design of yellow and black, originating from the crest of the reigning Habsburg Monarchy. Although this alternate design did go on to represent the Austrian Empire from 1700-1867. The current flag did however see six years of disuse, when the Germans annexed Austria in 1939, with the flag not being officially reinstated until the 1st of May, 1945, one week before VE day. Its current proportions being 2:3, and it is currently used as a civil flag and naval ensign.
