Pan African Colours
Two main factors have influenced the choice of colours for the flags of independent nations south of the Sahara. The first is the colours Green, Yellow and Red, inspired by the flag of Ethiopia the oldest independent state in Africa. The second Red, Black and Green was inspired by a flag designed by Marcus Garvey in 1917, the organiser of the first important black unification movement. In 1957 these colours were adopted by Ghana, who became the first independent country in western Africa to adopt the colours. Ghanas flag, using the same colours as the Ethiopian flag with a black star which was inspired by the Black Star Line Shipping Company.
